Systemic & Biologic
UVB phototherapy is a life changing treatment that helps most of our psoriasis patients control flares and regain their healthy skin.
Systemic and Biologic Treatments for Psoriasis
For patients with severe psoriasis, and for those who have failed topical and phototherapy, there is the option of tablets and injections for their condition.
Systemic Medications
Systemic medications are mainly tablets that are utilised to reduce the thickness of psoriasis plaques, reduce inflammation and even help reduce the impact of psoriasis in joints.
There are 3 main medications widely used in Australia, and these all have different modes of action and have different side-effects and monitoring requirements.
Some are Vitamin-A derivatives, which are involved in modulating cell turnover on the skin and thinning out psoriatic plaques.
Others are immune-suppressive medications, which reduce overall inflammation but require blood-tests for monitoring.
Your dermatologist will discuss your options in regards to these, based on the severity of your psoriasis, your general medical history and lifestyle.
Biologic Medications
Biologics are the most recent additions to psoriasis treatment. In patients who have severe psoriasis and have failed traditional topicals, phototherapy and systemics, these may make a massive impact on their condition.
Biologics are mainly injections given by patients themselves, and there is a number of different varieties available for prescription at present.
Your dermatologist will discuss if you are a candidate for these injections and their recommendations for which one.
